Tough Mudder Training

The one that started it all. Filmed entirely on my flip type camera with the help of my kids. This was actually filmed a few days before my birthday. Plus, it wasn’t really 4:36am (hate to disappoint you). This was shot with no audio so I had to add all the sound later during the editing process. This is also the first video I ever edited using iMovie. I was using tutorials as I was working. It was filmed in one day and edited in a half a day. When this video was floating around in my head I had 3 songs in mind. The other songs were by Corrosion of Conformity and the Exploding Hearts. I am SO glad I went with the Isley Brothers.

    Hey Moustache Man!

You have been my inspiration throughout my training for Tough Mudder Yorkshire this Saturday September 7th! Pretty much trained exactly how you have except the barefoot (dude you would understand if you ever get to see Yorkshire!!!).

My new passion in life is Tough Mudder, like you I was big into my martial arts but this is a different gravy! I hope to someday see you at the worlds brother! Be great to meet you with my team!

    All the best man!

Hey there! I am going to be training this year for the upcoming Tough Mudder in Dallas for 2014. I am all over the web trying to find some type of course training that’s not just running and working out. Is there anything that you know of in the DFW area that does this? I have a team of about 15 people running with me! Thanks a bunch and KEEP IT UP!!

    • Mustacheman December 13, 2013 at 11:37 pm #

Sorry Casie, I don’t know of anyone in that area. I’d suggest getting together with your team at least once a week and mimic the hardships you will face at the Mudder. Run, crawl, jump, climb, and have a good time. Probably better than taking some training course somewhere. DIY! Best of luck!

  17. Mike December 22, 2013 at 6:01 pm #

Awesome tune throughout the video, i’m sure you have been asked many times before, but who is it??

    • Mustacheman December 29, 2013 at 7:33 pm #

The song is “Keep On Doin'” by the mighty Isley Brothers, Mike.

  18. Ryan Mallett December 31, 2013 at 2:36 am #

Andy, I have been interested in doing TM for about a year now…but it wasn’t until I saw your training video that I became SUPER amped about the event! Hoping to do the TM in Houston or Austin, TX in 2014!! Just in the last 2 weeks, I’ve gone from 280 lbs to 260 lbs (seems like a lot for a guy that’s 5’10”, but my legs are frickin’ tree trunks. Lol). I use my job as a construction laborer as a workout, in addition to my morning and evening routines! Thanks for the motivation, brother!!! God bless!!!

    • Mustacheman December 31, 2013 at 4:06 pm #

20lbs in two weeks?! Good job, brother! Keep it up! Good luck at your Mudder and be sure to let me know how it goes.

  19. Dave January 17, 2014 at 4:12 pm #

Awesome. Amped to start training for the WVA 2014 TM.

  20. duncan January 22, 2014 at 10:06 am #

I forgot you drove me to do it a couple of years ago.
    Clearly the video works.
    Massive props to you mate.
    I really enjoyed myself.

Still can’t grow the face fungus though. At 49, apparently I’m still waiting to mature.

  21. Gabe February 28, 2014 at 5:52 pm #

Great video it was very inspirational!

Me and a friend are in high school and we just signed up for the Atlanta TM. We have been training every day before school for it! The main thing I’m not sure of is what kind of shoe to wear for the race any advice would be helpful !!

    • Mustacheman March 1, 2014 at 12:53 am #

      Thanks, Gabe!

Any lightweight sneaker with good drainage should be fine. You may want a descent tread, too. Avoid any type of cotton socks as well. Good luck!

  22. Henry March 5, 2014 at 8:42 pm #

Love that video. A friend of mine sent it to me a few years ago to convince me to run a TM with him, and I finally gave in and ran the mid-atlantic with him in 2012. I have a quick question if it’s not to intrusive: At 4:25 … Is that in your house? I’ve been meaning to convert my garage into a dojo and I’ve been wondering what to do about the floor. It looks like you laid down mats? Was that a pain? 🙂 Anyway, thanks for inspiring your fellow 40-somethings to get off the couch.

    • Mustacheman March 6, 2014 at 4:25 pm #

Not intrusive, Henry. The stuff with the red mat is in my basement. It’s old, discarded wrestling mat from our local high school. I knew a guy and got it cheap. It used to cover the floor of my martial art school but when I closed I used it in my basement. It’s heavy and laying it down is kind of a pain. You just cut it with a carpet knife. What sucks is that it expands in the summer and contracts when it’s cold in the winter. Right now there are one inch gaps at the seams. Consider that if you install that kind of matting in your garage.

I AM SO IN LOVE! lol…You look absolutely amazing mustache man! You actually have man legs! Wow. Beautiful! 🙂
